Am I in Over My Head? Ambitions of 2015

Can you believe it is already the first of 2015? This is what happens when you grow up, isn’t it? Life just speeds by at ever-increasing velocity. That’s why I find it so important to set goals at the beginning of each year. Some people hate New Year’s resolutions. Statistically, most people will drop their resolutions before the end of the month. When I start a new year, I don’t really set resolutions. I set ambitions. These are goals that have grown out of my achievements in 2014. They relate to great dreams I have, such as writing a novel and growing my blogging life. There are the old standby goals relating to finances and fitness. I don’t care if those are stereotypes. They are parts of life I take seriously. By setting these goals, I get myself closer to my dreams, even if I don’t achieve them in the new year.

Chapter TK - Goals of a writer and blogger for 2015

Be More Pacific

I’m not sure if this was bound to happen or if this is a side effect of this blog, but I feel like I have become unnecessarily confrontational lately. Just because I hate Apple and Xbox doesn’t mean I need to point out their flaws every chance I get. Just because I disagree with a person or am offended by them does not mean I need to let emotion fill me.

There are a million things to complain about and a million more things that are wrong with the world. The point of this blog is not to be angry, though. it’s simply to question. I can question without this negativity. For every thing that is wrong, there is something else that is right and beautiful. Life will be happier if I focus more on those things. While I still plan to question and talk about things that bug me on Chapter TK (the blog isn’t changing any time soon), I want to work on letting things slide off of me more easily.

It’s time I approach the world with more peace, especially if peace is something I want to do my part to promote.

Read at least one novel each month

That is, I hope to read at least 12 books this year. It seems like such a small amount, but I only read 9 last year. I’ve got to take baby steps into this adult life.

I think the reason I had such a low number is that I was reading books with more complexity. Reading a bunch of Young Adult novels is easy as pie for me. Reading through The Wheel of Time series is another story. That isn’t to say one or the other are better than the other. I simply read YA faster than other books.

The goals inside this goal are to finish the Harry Potter series (there’s 3 books right there) and to finish the Wheel of Time Series (and there’s another 8). Those two series, along with Richelle Mead‘s The Ruby Circle will easily make that goal. The challenge will be the Wheel of Time, but I am determined. If I manage to get through all these books, the next series on the list is Lord of the Rings.

Finish my first novel

This is another goal with mini goals built inside. I plan to finish the first draft of my first novel by March 20th, the first day of Spring. The rest of the year will be spent editing that novel and preparing it for possible publication. I also plan to start a second book while I’m editing the first book, but I don’t want to put a goal to that. What’s most important is finishing this novel and editing it to glory.

Will this first book be anything worth while? Well, I’m not sure how good it will be, but I’ll be happy just to say I wrote something. I have every intention so seeking out traditional publishing methods with multiple books before I look into self-publishing. I have nothing against self-publishing. This is just the way I want to go with my books at the moment. If I have written and tried to publish a handful of books with no luck, then I will consider self-publication.

There is one last piece to this puzzle. December was a free month where I had little time for anything, even with a few days off for the holidays. Starting right now, I’m jumping back on the horse. I plan to work on my novel at least twice a week for a minimum of an hour each sitting. I may have to make a schedule to fit that in with my blogging ambitions

Make $100 a month blogging

This is such a small goal, but I have no idea what to expect. I’ve started a blog called Tickled TK. This is a place for all that tickles me and makes me happy. In short, it’s my nerdy space. I will still do my best to blog here every Tuesday and Friday. I will post on Tickled TK every Monday and Wednesday. At least, that’s the plan.

Tickled TK is on WordPress.org, so I have more freedom with ads and affiliate links. Believe me, I have no plans to sell out. If I’m going to make money blogging, I’ll make it blogging about what I want to blog about. It’s just that, if I can make a little extra money in the process, why not? Also, wouldn’t you all love me more if I was a professional blogger who would answer comments right away and dedicate more time to creating quality content? I know I’d love me more ^_^

Have a net worth larger than $-25,000

Since I couldn’t make my goal of being worth more than $-20,000 last year, I’m going to set the bar a little lower for myself. Being worth more than $-25,000 would still be a huge accomplishment for me. I don’t have a real set path for this. I pay more than the minimum on both my student loans and my car loan. I’m hoping that will be enough to get me there. We will see.

Double my savings account

My savings goal was more than ambitions last year. Having $15,000 in my savings account is just an insane idea. Again, I’m setting a lighter goal this year and simply aim to double what my savings account was at the end of 2014. I did some calculations and found that I’ll have to increase why I put in my savings account every month just to achieve this goal. It’s worth it, though. Everyone needs an emergency fund.

Travel to Another Country

This time last year, I had grand dreams of seeing Machu Picchu in Peru. While I still plan to see that some day in the near future, it’s not going to be happening it 2015. I never expected to be laid off in 2014. With a wonderful new job, I also have a wonderful new vacation policy, The long story short is that I won’t have two weeks of vacation time to play with this year. What I’ll have is about 1 week and I’m not sure what to do with it, yet. I’m starting to think I’ll start with something even easier for the first big trip I’ll plan on my own.

This year, I’m thinking about going back to the United Kingdom or taking a cruise somewhere. Before I picked Peru, I tried really hard to get my boyfriend to give me his opinion. Like usual, he was fine going wherever I want. It takes him time to think on these things before coming up with an opinion. I am game for both those ideas and love the idea of showing him the places I visited when I studied abroad. I’m not sure what will happen this year. All I know is, even if the country is Canada (not a bad country, just a close one) I WILL go to another country this year. At least, that’s the goal.

__

With a new year comes new goals. Like 2014, I’m probably filling this year up with way more goals than I can handle. That’s fine with me, though. It gives me something to aim for and prepares me for even more goals in 2016. Happy New Year, friends.

What are some goals you have set for this year? What do you think your chances of of achieving them? What do you think my chances are of achieving this grand list?

  1. You’ve got some really thoughtful goals there. šŸ™‚ I think it’s the best we can do, to set aims which are very ambitious. In such a way we achieve more. Settling on some easy-to-get things is not as rewarding as raising our expectations towards ourselves and achieving at least some of them, right?
Well, my goals are in the making. šŸ™‚ One thing I know for sure is that I want to be nicer to people. I’ve let my emotions sit behind the steering wheel too many times.

    1. Being nicer is a good goal to have. I like making big goals. Shoot for the moon and you’ll at least land on a pretty good star, right?

    1. That’s fantastic! There is no way I can do that, but I do have a goal to have all my student loans paid off by 2022 (exactly 10 years since graduating college).

Man, I can’t even imagine what being debt free would be like anymore. Best of luck to you!

      1. Thank you! Yes, it will be tight, but if I stick with my plan I can do it. When I was thinking of what I wanted to accomplish I knew I would still have that debt looming over my head. It’s a weird and oddly uncomfortable feeling.

  2. Love your ambitions :). I like how you try to think about all areas of your life, not just one or two. I started with a very complex list that I’m currently narrowing down! Good luck with yours!

    1. I don’t think there is a problem with a long list so long as there is a sense of priority. Here’s to your new year. Hope you achieve all you want to!

  3. I like your goals and feel you will be checking each one off of your list šŸ™‚ as for my goals- they are to get my priorities corrected- I let my 9th wedding anniversary pass right on by due to focusing more on my business (Origami Owl Custom Jewelry-Independent Designer) and not my family. Welp that goal is really the only one- because I believe once I get focused on my family-but also work my bussiness-everything should fall into place šŸ™‚
    Happy New Year everyone!
    Clara

    1. That sounds great to me. None of us are perfect and I think we are all at risk of losing sight of what’s important in the rush of life. That’s why I like this time of year. It forces us to think about where we are and where we want to be. Happy New Year!

    1. I know what you mean, but I think it’s easier to focus on full on health than just getting to the gym every day. At least then, when you can’t make it to work out, there are still things you can do to work toward your goal.
